November Thankfulness
2020 has been a year like any other. No, there was no misspelling in the prior sentence and yes, you read it correctly. I fully realize there is an ongoing pandemic and many, many lives have been affected in unimaginable ways. Many have lost jobs or have family members who are either infected with the virus or have passed away. I do not want to minimize that in any manner. However, please allow me to explain the context in which my statement is being made. As I write this article, we are preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving in the coming week. It is my opinion we continue to live in the most blessed country in the world. We are privileged to have an extremely stable, and affordable, source of food. America’s farmers and ranchers spend untold hours each week working diligently to ensure this continues. They face the same health challenges as the general public and have the same concerns as to what this pandemic may mean to their business and family. Yes, we have experienced times this year where grocery stores did not have the supply of food we are accustomed to seeing. This, however, was not due to the lack of effort from this nation’s farmer and ranchers. They continue to perform their vital role in this country’s ongoing success. In fact, dairy and hog producers this year were, at times, asked to either dump milk or euthanize animals solely due to the lack of processing capacity. Those producers put their heart and soul into ensuring they provide the best product possible to the American consumer. Being asked to destroy what they were a part of providing was certainly not easy for them. One U.S. farm presently produces the items necessary to feed 166 people both here and abroad. That is in contrast to the 26 people each American farm fed in 1960. That is a truly remarkable growth rate. As I close, I want to go back to my opening statement. 2020 has been a year like any other. I say this from the perspective that, even during an unprecedented pandemic, America’s farmer and ranchers continue to work diligently, and for the most part, thanklessly to ensure the American consumer has food to enjoy. This Thursday most everyone will take time to reflect on the things for which they are thankful. I wonder how many of those reflections will include the efforts of America’s farmers and ranchers? As I can only control my thoughts, I know for certain, there will be at least one. Will you please join me in making sure there are more?

AgriTalk Interview with Alan Hoskins
Alan Hoskins continues to represent our organizations in a very positive manner. Industry experts and media continue to call upon Alan for his knowledge. In an interview with Tyne Morgan, Host of the US Farm Report, Alan was featured on AgriTalk this week.
Below is a link to the interview he did with Tyne Morgan (Host of US Farm Report) yesterday on Agri-Talk:
https://omny.fm/shows/agritalk/agritalk-november-18-2020?t=16m
He discusses updated net farm income and the change for farmers financials since August. Corn and beans are both up and combined with yields many farmers have working capital replenishment, they normally don’t see. Alan also mentions the importance of talking with farm operations about their long term goals. He is also seeing a lot of folks look at used vs. new equipment because of the market, in addition to a focus on investing working capital to help improve efficiencies, purchase more land or even deploy funds to accelerate real estate payments. Alan shares advice with his farm customers, “Don’t be in a rush to make a decision, make sure the funds are deployed and fit well into the long term strategy of the operation.”

Alan Hoskins – Appointment to the USDA Advisory Committee
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2019 — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced the appointment of 20 members to serve on the Advisory Committee on Beginning Farmers and Ranchers (ACBFR). The newly appointed members serve terms of up to two years through 2021.
Smart Uses For Your MFP Money
Farmers who enroll in the 2019 Market Facilitation Program (MFP) are expected to start receiving payments in mid-August. While the payments are a blanket rate by county, there’s no blanket suggestion on what farmers should do with those funds. Bankers and business consultants alike agree this must be an individual decision based on your farm’s financial position, debt structure and business strategy.
First, it’s critical to analyze your financial position without the cash injection.
“Before any decision is finalized, I would suggest producers have a really good understanding of the farm’s current liquidity position,” advises Alan Hoskins, president of American Farm Mortgage. “Also, given the challenges we face from a market and weather perspective, make sure that you know a solid estimate of this year’s financials.”

Meet our HOST!
Tyne Morgan is the Host of U.S. Farm Report!
Tyne Morgan is doing what she calls her "dream job," as the first female host of a major agricultural television show. She’s a Missouri girl who has generations of agriculture rooted in her blood. Born and raised in Lexington, Mo., FFA was a big part of her high school career. Her father is an agriculture teacher/FFA Advisory and was her biggest supporter/teacher. Through public speaking and various contest teams, she actually plunged into broadcast at the young age of 16. Although Tyne always knew she wanted to go into TV, it was then she discovered farm broadcasting was her calling.
Tyne attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where she majored in Agriculture Journalism, with an emphasis in broadcast. During her college years, she was a farm broadcast intern for Brownfield Ag News, and was the 2006 Missouri State Fair Queen, serving as the Ambassador for Missouri agriculture.
Today, you can watch Tyne every week hosting U.S. Farm Report, and helping viewers navigate the volatile markets with the weekly marketing roundtables. She’s also feature every week on Machinery Pete TV and AgriTalk radio.
